THE HISTORY OF MUNICH BEER
Munich is known worldwide as a beer metropolis. As the heart of Germany’s brewing heritage and a key destination in Europe for beer lovers, Munich plays a central role in both German and European beer culture. The Oktoberfest and the traditional art of brewing still characterize the image of the Bavarian capital today.
But Munich was not always a beer city: it was not until the 16th century that beer replaced wine as the most popular drink, and in the 19th century, with industrialization and the rise of the famous beer palaces, Munich finally became an international beer stronghold. Today, Munich beer stands for the highest quality, brewed in accordance with the strict Munich Purity Law of 1487, and is coveted worldwide as a protected geographical indication. Whether in the traditional Hofbräuhaus, at the Oktoberfest or in the shady beer garden in Munich, beer is much more than just a drink: it is a piece of lived culture and a way of life, deeply rooted in the tradition of the local brewery and its importance to Munich’s vibrant beer scene.
